Please join us this Wednesday, September 23 (21 and up only, please!) for a chef’s 3-course Honig Vineyard Wine Dinner. Cost is a mere forty-five dollars.

The wine bar will remain open until 11:00pm so after cpmpletion of your dinner you may continue to enjoy Church Street Cellars ambience. Here’s the line-up. Wine notes and bottle prices are at the end of this announcement if you’re interested.

2008 Honig Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc ~ $27
(Rutherford, Napa Valley) 86% Honig Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Honig Estate Muscat and 10% Napa Valley Semillon. Taste: A perfect mélange of honeydew melon, lime, floral, lemongrass and passion fruit. A creamy, rich mid-palate, accented with French oak and crème brulee. The finish is long, with refreshing minerality.

2006 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon ~ $39
(Rutherford, Napa Valley) 95% Cabernet, 2% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Taste: Blackberry, cherry and plum fruit aromas and flavors are accented by vanilla, allspice and cocoa. The richly textured mid-palate is balanced by medium tannins and a lengthy finish.

2008 Honig Late HarvestSauvignon Blanc ~ $68 (500ml)
(Rutherford, Napa Valley) Winemaker’s Notes 100% Sauvignon Blanc, Honig Estate. Aromas and flavors of honey, dried apricots and citrus rind, layered with creme brulee and mineral. Luscious, with a rich, long finish and balanced acidity.

Petite Sirah

What is Petite Sirah.

Petite – like a 350 pound ballerina. Ever heard “bull in a china shop”. (I get called that by my wife all the time). Perhaps this was a French attempt at Euphemism?

So, why “petite?” Petite Sirah (no, the “i” isn’t a typo) is one of those stealth grapes, like Carmènere in Chile, or Zinfandel in California, mistaken for something they were not until exposed by DNA tests. When DNA isn’t busy solving murders and tracing family trees, it’s hard at work sorting out wine grape confusion.

Petite Sirah turns out to be the offspring of Syrah and a very old variety from France’s Rhone valley called Pelousin. It’s also known as Durif, after the French nurseryman who bred it. So it’s petite only the sense of being Syrah’s love-child.

What it is….an amazingly potent wine varietal that will coat your teeth purple and wallop you with alcohol. For customers of Church Street Cellars two things that are not all that unpleasant.

Come by Church Street Cellars and enjoy a glass of Petite Sirah with our lamb chops or rib eye steak. Tuesday are still half-price on the enomatic wine serving machine.

2005 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee

This is the wine to choose when you’re looking for vivid fruit and rich, soft tannins–the perfect wine for the season. Mountain Cuvee is a winemaker’s red blend that beautifully expresses the distinctive qualities of the traditional Bordeaux varietals. Each of the grape varieties in the cuvee contributes nuances that harmonize with the other components, resulting in a complex array of aromas and flavors. The wine displays an incredibly aromatic nose, a rich mid-palate and a lengthy finish. Complex spice aromas and concentrated sweet fruit abound in this wine. The aromas entice with blackberry and ripe plum mingling with clove and vanilla. The mouth is alive with berries, cherries and spicy oak. Smooth and full, this approachable wine offers a long, lingering finish.Cabernet 57%,Merlot 41%, Petite verdot 2%.

The Mer Soleil Vineyard, located in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey County, is named for two natural forces that create its growing conditions: sea (mer) and sun (soleil).

Mer Soleil’s vines are nestled on lower slopes of the Sierra de Salinas range in what is one of the coolest, driest grape growing areas in California. During the growing season, warmer inland temperatures at the southern end of the Salinas Valley pull cooling morning and evening fogs into the vineyards, while the afternoons are warm and sunny. Brisk afternoon breezes keep the grapes dry and pristine.

Charlie Wagner II is the winemaker and viticulturist.

2006 Mer Soleil Chardonnay
Our Chardonnay from the Mer Soleil Vineyard, located in this cool, dry part of Monterey County on land we began cultivating in 1988, is now at full maturity. The sea (“Mer”) and sun (“Soleil”) climate of this coastal appellation causes morning and evening fogs and warm, bright afternoons, a combination that helps produce the high-quality fruit we use to make this California-style Chardonnay.

Tasting notes:
Soft gold color. Richly perfumed nose, with light notes of honeysuckle, truffle and buttery oak. Full, layered flavors of tropical fruit are balanced by a bright acidity of sweet citrus, and linger though the long, creamy finish.

2006 Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay
The grapes were pressed and fermented in both stainless steel and cement vats, with no oak contact or malolactic fermentation. We bottled the wine early in the year and capped it with a twist top to maintain its fresh character and crisp citrus finish
